List of Techniques in “Water Breathing”!

There are a total of 10 forms in “Water Breathing,” and Tanjiro has mastered all of them.
By the way, the current Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, who also uses Water Breathing, has additionally invented an original form called “Eleventh Form,” but that will be discussed in a separate article.
(In detail here: “What is Giyu Tomioka’s ‘Nagi’ technique?” | Images Available • Demon Slayer)
In this article, we will introduce the name of each technique for the 10 forms, along with a brief overview.
First Form: Water Surface Slash

It is executed by vigorously swinging horizontally from a crossed arm position. This technique enabled Tanjiro to cut the tough neck of a hand demon that neither Inosuke nor Zenitsu could defeat, thus achieving revenge for both Inosuke and Zenitsu.
Second Form: Water Wheel

Second Form: Water Wheel
This technique involves rotating one’s body vertically like a water wheel while executing the attack. It has a wider range of attack compared to Water Surface Slash and can be used against larger enemies.
Additionally, there exists a modified technique called “Second Form: Improved Horizontal Water Wheel” as a variant.

Third Form: Flowing Dance

It is a technique executed with smooth footwork reminiscent of flowing water, allowing for simultaneous attack and evasion through its movements.
Fourth Form: Striking Tide

This is the technique Tanjiro first unleashed after mastering “Water Breathing”.
By stringing together slashes, it allows him to attack multiple enemies simultaneously.
He used this technique against the two demons who ambushed him during the Final Selection.
It’s the technique through which he succeeded in defeating demons for the first time after mastering “Water Breathing”.
Fifth Form: Blessed Rain After the Drought

This form is known as the “only compassionate sword technique in Water Breathing,” as it inflicts little pain on the one being cut.
It’s rarely used since it’s only employed when the opponent willingly offers their neck.
During the Spider Mountain Arc, the “Mother Spider” demon, tormented by the terror of Lower Rank Five “Rui’s” dominance, offered her own neck to Tanjiro, seeking release through death. Tanjiro responded by using “Blessed Rain After the Drought ” to sever her head as a form of mercy.
Sixth Form: Twisting Whirlpool

It’s a technique executed while twisting the upper and lower body, releasing slashing attacks that carve through the surroundings in a spiral motion, generating momentum.
While it’s a powerful technique capable of attacking over a wide area even on land, its true strength is demonstrated underwater.
Seventh Form: Droplet Ripple Thrust

This is the fastest technique within “Water Breathing” and, as the name suggests, it’s executed with thrusts rather than slashes.
When Tanjiro was attacked at the Tsuzumi Mansion by the fast-moving temari controlled by demons, this fastest technique was employed to counter them.
However, since demons typically don’t die unless their heads are severed, it’s primarily a technique used to deal with something rather than to kill them.
Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin

It’s a technique executed by swinging the sword downward from above to the ground, mimicking the flow of water cascading down a waterfall.
It boasts a wide range of attack and is one of the most powerful techniques within “Water Breathing.”
This technique was employed when three “Swamp Demons” lurking in the ground simultaneously attacked Tanjiro, allowing him to damage all three at once.
Ninth Form: Water Flow Splashes

In this technique, rather than being used for attacking, it serves as a form of evasion and footwork.
By minimizing and shortening the contact surface with the ground upon landing, one can move faster and maneuver more freely than usual.
It was employed to evade attacks from the demon “Kyogai,” who launched attacks while drumming and rotating the room.
Tenth Form: Constant Flux!

It’s the final form within “Water Breathing” (although not considered a secret technique).
This technique involves striking with consecutive blows while rotating the sword. With each rotation, starting from the first strike, the power increases, making it the strongest technique within “Water Breathing.”
It was used during the Spider Mountain Arc to cut through the resilient threads controlled by Lower Rank Five, “Rui,” and sever his head.
Lastly,,,

“Fourth Form,” “Sixth Form,” and so on made me think they were ranked by strength, but they’re completely different. Also, not all techniques involve slashing or thrusting; there are techniques related to evasion and footwork as well. It made me realize that “Water Breathing” is primarily about “breathing” (taking in air) after all.
