All demons appearing in “Demon Slayer” are creatures transformed from humans by “Muzan Kibutsuji.” Among them, the powerful demons selected as subordinates of Muzan are the “Twelve Kizuki.” There are six each of “Upper Rank Demons” and “Lower Rank Demons,” with the Upper Rank being stronger than the Lower Rank, and the closer the number is to one, the stronger they are. This time, we will introduce the Twelve Kizuki, who are the Upper and Lower Rank Demons!
The origin of all demons, Muzan Kibutsuji
As mentioned earlier, demons are not born demons, but humans transformed into demons by Muzan Kibutsuji. Their strength is proportional to the amount of blood given by Muzan Kibutsuji and the number of people eaten (effectiveness is multiplied in the case of rare blood). Born over 1000 years ago, information about Muzan Kibutsuji, the origin of all demons, will be omitted as it is lengthy. (For details, please click here: [Demon Slayer] How was Muzan Kibutsuji born? Introduction to abilities and usual behavior!) Now let’s introduce the Twelve Kizuki!
Demon Slayer | List of Demons! [Lower Rank Demons]
Former Lower Rank Six, “Kyogai (Kyogai)”
Once chosen as one of the Twelve Kizuki, he gradually became unable to eat humans and was stripped of his status along with the digitized right eye, abandoned by Muzan Kibutsuji. After a one-on-one battle with Tanjiro, he was defeated and disappeared.
Lower Rank Five, “Rui (Rui)”
Demons usually don’t gather in groups, but they have strong attachment to “family” and act as a group with the “family” they have designated (father, mother, brother, sister). However, these bonds are tied by power and fear and are extremely distorted. He used blood demon arts reminiscent of spiders, imparting abilities to his “family” to protect them. He easily annihilated over ten Demon Slayer Corps members who headed to Mt. Natagumo, where demons lurk, with his family. He engaged in a long battle with Tanjiro and others, but was ultimately struck down by the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, who came to their aid.
Lower Rank Two, Three, Four, and Six
These are the four demons of the Lower Rank, excluding “Lower Rank One” in the image above. (Incidentally, their names are “Two: “Rokuro (Rokuro)”, “Three: “Mukago (Mukago)”, “Four: “Reiryuko (Reiryuko)”, and “Six: “Kamadoe (Kamadoe)”). These demons were said to be
“I think it’s better to focus solely on the Upper Ranks when discussing the Twelve Kizuki. Let’s dismantle the Lower Ranks.”and were all executed. However, only Lower Rank One “Enmu” was recognized for his aptitude and escaped execution.
Lower Rank One “Enmu (Enmu)”
A demon in a refined Western-style attire. He uses blood demon arts to put targets to sleep and manipulate their dreams, captivating humans with pleasant dreams. He attacked Tanjiro and his companions using a tactic of attacking the “core of the mind” by infiltrating the targets’ dreams with his minions while they were asleep (destroying the core would render them vegetables). He also planned to merge with a train and devour the passengers altogether. However, However, he was defeated before his plan could succeed due to the unexpected cooperation and fierce resistance of Tanjiro and his friends. That concludes the Lower Rank demons. As you can see, they were all annihilated!
Demon Slayer | Demon List! [Upper Rank Demons]
Upper Rank Six “Daki” and “Gyutaro”
They are a pair of siblings turned demons. For years, ‘Daki’ operated as a courtesan under the name ‘Hime’ in the red-light district, while her brother ‘Gyutaro’ emerged from Daki’s body as needed. The weakness of demons is generally their necks, but these demons won’t perish unless both their heads are severed. (Even if one is severed, they’ll still be fine as long as the other remains intact.)
In their human lives, Daki went by the name ‘Ume’ and possessed exceptional beauty. However, she blinded a high-ranking client in retaliation, leading to her being bound and burned alive. At the brink of death, she was saved by Gyutaro and transformed into a demon by Upper Rank Two, ‘Doma.’
As Upper Rank demons, they excel in speed, strength, and agility compared to their lower-ranked counterparts. Daki utilizes blood demon art involving her sash, while Gyutaro, despite his emaciated appearance, surprises with his speed and strength, wielding a sickle imbued with dual poisons to overwhelm Sound Pillar Tengen Uzui and Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku. However, with the efforts of Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira, they were defeated without casualties.
Upper Rank Five, ‘Gyokko,’
He hides within a jar, assuming a grotesque form unique to demons, connected to the jar in a state that’s the only one of its kind. He fancies himself as the “Supreme Artist,” transforming slain humans into grotesque objects and boasting of them as “artworks,” showing contempt for human life. Gifted with exceptional sensory abilities, he avoids direct combat and instead employs deceptive tactics, using jars produced from his palms to engage in tricky battles.
His Blood Demon Art often revolves around aquatic creatures or water-related phenomena. This is because he was born and raised in a fishing village, where even as a human, he displayed aberrant behavior by sewing different kinds of fish onto himself and collecting scales and bones in jars. He can teleport from jar to jar, and the jars themselves appear unpredictably, enhancing his agility and evasiveness.
By shedding his skin, he can assume his true form, referred to as the second stage, the “Perfectly Beautiful Form.” In this transformed state, he possesses a robust upper body resembling that of a half-human, half-fish creature with a snake-like lower body. In this second form, he engages in direct combat, facilitated by the resilience of his scales and the agility of his body, which he boasts are “harder than diamond.”
He launches a violent assault on the Swordsmith Village, slaying numerous swordsmiths. There, he confronts the Mist Pillar, Muichiro Tokito.
He unleashed his true form but was ultimately defeated by Muichiro Tokito, who awakened his “Mark” and slashed his neck.
Upper Rank Four: Hantengu
Always seemingly afraid of something, he often emits a fearful “Hiiii” sound. While he sometimes appears in a human-sized form, his true body is actually tiny, no larger than a human heart. The hardness of his small neck is such that it can even bend Kanao Tsuyuri’s Nichirin Blade, which had been tempered by Tanjiro Kamado.
Exceptionally skilled at assimilating with his surroundings to the point that even Hashiras cannot detect him until they visually confirm his presence. His movements are agile and graceful. His Blood Demon Art allows him to embody his emotions at the moment of desperation, spawning new split bodies. When his neck is severed, four demonic entities of tengu bearing the kanji for “joy,” “anger,” “sorrow,” and “pleasure” split from his tongue. Later, when cornered by Tanjiro and others, he generates two new split bodies.
Before becoming a demon, Doma was a deceitful petty criminal who pretended to be blind despite having sight. He engaged in theft and deceitfully shifted blame for his misdeeds onto others to justify his actions. Eventually, he committed murder and was about to be executed by the authorities when he was transformed into a demon by Kokushibo. After a battle with Tanjiro, Nezuko, Genya, and Sanemi, he was decapitated by Tanjiro and perished while reminiscing about his past deeds.
Upper Rank Three, Akaza
Akaza, is depicted as a young-looking demon with red short hair and intricate tattoos covering his entire body. He possesses remarkable strength and intelligence, showing respect to those with formidable abilities and even attempting to recruit them to become demons themselves. Akaza, also known as the “Fist Demon,” engages in hand-to-hand combat, displaying exceptional skill and speed that even rivals that of Rengoku Kyojuro, the Flame Hashira. Despite being declined by Rengoku, Akaza initiates a battle with him. Although he manages to inflict severe injuries, he is forced to retreat when sunlight exposes him to danger. Despite receiving punishment from Kokushibo, he continues to survive.
Upper Rank Two, Doma
Doma, is depicted as a youthful demon with hair adorned with blood-like patterns and attire resembling traditional Japanese clothing. When he was Lower Moon Six, he turned the dying humans, Gyutaro and Daki, into demons. Despite his cheerful and carefree demeanor, Doma exhibits psychopathic tendencies, such as decorating a jar received from Muzan Kibutsuji with the severed neck of a human woman. His weapon of choice is a sharp iron fan, which he uses to unleash slashing attacks. He also masquerades as the leader of a certain religious sect.
Upper Rank One, Kokushibou
Kokushibou, is a demon who appears dressed as a swordsman. There isn’t much information available about him due to his limited appearances, but he is notable for having six eyes and birthmarks on his left temple and right neck. Interestingly, he bears a striking resemblance to the swordsman adorned with a hanafuda-patterned earring, who shares a connection with the Demon Slayer Corps.
Lastly,,,
Finally, “You are… going too far…” This quote is from Volume 12, Chapter 99 of “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.” It’s been quite a journey, but these are the members of the Twelve Kizuki, under the command of Muzan Kibutsuji. While the Lower Rank demons have been eradicated, the Upper Rank demons still pose a significant threat as they remain alive. In particular, Upper Rank One, Kokushibou, presents numerous unknown factors and is confirmed to be stronger than Doma, making him a formidable opponent. How will the Demon Slayer Corps deal with them? If you want to learn more about demons, feel free to explore further. Thanks for reading this far! That concludes this time…
